These pages have been compiled to bring together and provide some basic information on the often confusing and hyped-up business of fly lines.
Few subjects (apart from fly rods) have had so much conflicting and confusing nonsense written about them.
Hardly a day goes past without some “new taper design” hitting the market that has been carefully “researched and developed” and is perfect for all levels of casting ability from beginner to expert. Buy this line and you will be casting further and more delicately than ever, reaching fish that were, until this line arrived on the scene, way out of your reach. If you forget to buy one, don’t worry; in few weeks another, even better line will come along that will make it obsolete anyway.
Most of this is of course little more than marketing. These days pretty much all fly lines are very good for honest down to earth fishing purposes and genuine advances in design have more to do with materials science and manufacturing processes than the smoke and mirrors of taper tinkering. There are no magic bullets; a thoughtful fly fisher will do just fine with pretty much any half decent line.
